Scent notes

A vanilla that has been given something to lean on. Vanilla bean is the center and stays there, but a little nutmeg at the opening stops it reading as dessert, and maple underneath adds the darker, faintly resinous sweetness that plain vanilla candles usually lack. The label calls it Soothing. It is the closest thing in the range to a comfort scent, and the one most people burn through the winter.

  • Opening — nutmeg
  • Heart — vanilla bean
  • Base — maple
  • Character — warm, round, quietly spiced

How to use

Trim the wick to a quarter inch each time. Two to three hours on the first burn so the wax reaches the edge of the glass, then single burns under four hours. Vanilla and maple are heavy notes and they travel, so this one works in a living room or a bedroom where a lighter floral would disappear. It is also the candle to reach for when you want the house to smell lived in before guests arrive.

What's inside

Food-grade coconut wax, premium scented oils drawn from flowers, fruits and roots, and a 100% lead-free braided cotton wick. No paraffin, no dyes, no lead core. Eight ounces in amber glass, about eighty hours of burn time. Hand-crafted in small batches in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Why amber glass

Vanilla and maple oils darken and turn with sustained light exposure, and amber glass filters most of it before it reaches the wax. The scent stays true from the first hour to the last. The empty jar cleans out with warm soapy water and makes a good pen cup or a holder for cotton pads on a bathroom shelf.

Questions

What does the Vanilla Bean candle smell like?

Vanilla bean at the center, nutmeg at the opening, and maple underneath. It reads warm rather than sugary — the nutmeg is what keeps it from turning candy-like.

Is it a sweet candle?

Sweet, but not a bakery scent. If you have found vanilla candles cloying before, the maple and nutmeg here are the reason this one tends not to be.

How long does the 8 oz Vanilla Bean candle burn?

About eighty hours, with the wick trimmed and single burns kept under four hours.

Does coconut wax burn differently from soy or paraffin?

Yes. Coconut wax has a lower melting point than paraffin, so it burns cooler and slower — that is where the long burn time on a small jar comes from. It also throws scent at a lower temperature, so the fragrance arrives sooner after lighting. Unlike paraffin it produces no black soot, provided the wick is kept short.

Is the wick safe?

It is 100% braided cotton with no lead or metal core.

Where is it made?

Hand-crafted in small batches in Scottsdale, Arizona.
