Scent notes

Bergamot at the opening, spruce through the middle, musk underneath to keep it from turning sharp. It is the coldest scent in the range and the only one that reads as outdoors rather than indoors — the previous description called it windows-wide-open, which is exactly right. Nothing about it is sweet.

How to use

Trim the wick to a quarter inch before every light. Two to three hours on the first burn so the melt pool reaches the glass, then single burns under four hours. Spruce carries well, so this holds a larger room than the florals do. It works in an office or a study where a sweeter candle would get distracting, and it is the one to burn in December.

Why blue glass

Blue Birch is filled in blue glass, which is both the obvious choice for the name and a practical one — tinted glass keeps daylight off the oils, and bergamot is a citrus note that flattens quickly in the light. Empty, the jar washes out with warm soapy water and makes a good holder for pencils or brushes.

What does the Blue Birch candle smell like?

Bergamot, spruce and musk — a cool forest scent rather than a cozy one. It is fresh and slightly resinous, and it is not sweet at all.

Is Blue Birch a Christmas candle?

It works in winter, but it is drier and cooler than a holiday scent. If you want the warm, sappy Christmas-tree version, Balsam Fir Seasons is the one.

How long does it burn?

About eighty hours for the 8 oz and about a hundred and twenty-five for the 11 oz, with the wick trimmed and single burns kept under four hours.

Will it soot or smoke?

Not if the wick is kept trimmed to a quarter inch. The wax is coconut rather than paraffin, and the wick is braided cotton with no metal core, so there is nothing in it to produce black smoke.
